Troll History

Trolls have ignited the imaginations of different cultures for centuries. According to folklore, they come in many shapes and sizes…some nice…some not. Here at Troll Gazing, we celebrate a very specific sort of troll. This site is dedicated to the cheap vinyl toys from the 1960’s with an iconic mohair doo, cherub-like cheeks, and sometimes googly eyes.

Danish woodcarver Thomas Dam is the messiah of troll dolls. He carved his first troll in the late 1950’s when he couldn’t afford to purchase a gift for his daughter. She loved it. All of her friends wanted one. Troll dolls were an instant hit with villagers! By the 1960’s, vinyl versions of Dam’s original wooden troll were available all over the globe.  Following are our favorite trolls:

DAM Things

Trolls by Dam Things Establishment have mohair wigs and hand painted amber glass eyes. The hand painting contributes to the lovable googly eye.

Scandia House

Scandia House trolls are known for their fun colored mohair wigs and mesmerizing spiral eyes, which also come in several colors. They are the “lookers” of the troll world.
